About This Island
Ithaafushi is the largest private island in the Maldives.
At 32,000 square metres, roughly eight acres, it is the most expansive single-booking private island in the country, and the only one capable of holding the kind of household-scale gathering that a milestone wedding, an extended-family reunion, or a three-generation celebration calls for. Voavah at Four Seasons accommodates twelve. Cheval Blanc Randheli accommodates eight. Ithaafushi accommodates eighteen adults plus six children, in three substantial residences spread across the island.
The proposition is straightforward. For a family or group at the scale that has outgrown a single villa, Ithaafushi is the rental in the Maldives that does not require everyone to compromise on space.
The Three Residences
The compound is configured as three freestanding villa structures, each substantial in its own right, distributed across the island so that each household within a guest party has independent privacy.
The Beach Residence is the four-bedroom centrepiece, set on the white sand at the heart of the island. Two king bedrooms and two queen bedrooms, large common living areas, indoor and outdoor dining for the full party, direct beach access from each room, private pools, and the hot tubs that anchor the residence's evening social rhythm. This is where the main party's central activity tends to gravitate during a stay.
The Beach Estate is a three-bedroom estate on ivory sand, framed by coconut gardens, with private pool and the same direct beach access that defines every part of the property. The Estate is the family-bonding residence: parents with adult children, a household with their own staff, or a smaller wing of a larger gathering that wants its own daily rhythm.
The Overwater Villa is the two-bedroom haven suspended over the lagoon, with its own infinity pool, an open-air sky deck, and the standard Maldivian over-water experience scaled up to villa proportions. Guests step from the bedroom directly into the cerulean shallows. The Overwater Villa is typically chosen by the most romantically inclined member of a guest party.
Across the three buildings: five swimming pools, multiple hot tubs, a private entertainment clubhouse for the group's social centre, a fully equipped gym, the spa treatment rooms, and outdoor pavilions for dining and ceremony.
The Capacity Question, Honestly
The island sleeps up to 18 adults plus 6 children across the three residences, for a maximum total of 24 guests. This is the largest exclusive-use capacity of any Maldivian private island rental, and the room layouts work in several practical configurations:
- A family of 18 to 24 spanning two or three generations
- A wedding party of up to 18 adults plus children, with the ceremony on the beach and the celebration distributed across the residences
- A corporate retreat for senior leadership and partners
- A multi-family gathering of close friends, with each family in its own residence
Three groups of six to eight adults, each in their own residence, each with their own pool and beach, is the standard configuration for a Big Birthday or anniversary. The clubhouse is the central social engine; the residences are the private rooms.
The Service
Ithaafushi is staffed by Waldorf Astoria with the personal concierge model that the brand has carried since the original Waldorf-Astoria opened in New York in 1893. Each booking is assigned a dedicated concierge team that pre-coordinates the entire stay before arrival: dietary preferences for every meal, scheduling, transfers, cultural activities, the children's programme, and the small daily surprises that the team has time to imagine because they have the time and the resource to do so.
The culinary team is on-island for the duration. The signature dining model is "dine when you like": there is no fixed schedule. Breakfast can run from sunrise to noon. Dinner can be at six or at midnight. Service runs to the guests' rhythm rather than to the kitchen's.
For groups wanting the larger range of the resort's main dining (11 distinct restaurant concepts including the celebrated Terra and Yasmeen), the three-minute boat ride to the main resort island opens the entire Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi restaurant programme to the Private Island's guests at any time.
The Wider Resort
This is the structural feature that distinguishes Ithaafushi from every other Maldivian private island rental.
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is a three-island resort spanning a private island, a main island with 122 villas, and the Private Island that this listing concerns. The three islands are connected by speedboat shuttle. The full resort is one of Hilton's flagship Asian luxury properties, opened in 2019, and operates the largest yacht fleet in the Maldives: six Ithaafushi Princess yachts available to guests for private cruising, sandbank dinners, and inter-atoll excursions.
What this means in practice. The Private Island gives a guest party total privacy and total exclusivity for the duration of their stay. No other guests on the eight acres. No other tenders dock at the dock. No service to anyone else's villa. At the same time, every amenity of a fully operating 122-villa Waldorf Astoria resort is reachable in three minutes by boat: the eleven restaurants, the world-class spa, the marine activities, the dive centre, the kids' clubs, the watersports, the boutique. Service can also be brought to the Private Island whenever preferred. The model is the residential one: the resort comes to the guest by default, and the guest goes to the resort by choice.
This is the both / and of the Maldives ultra-luxury market, executed at the largest single-rental scale in the country.
A Day, In Sketch
Mornings begin with the Maldivian sunrise across the lagoon. Coffee on the deck of your residence. Breakfast wherever you have asked for it, whenever you have asked for it, prepared by the chefs assigned to your party.
The day shapes itself. Several mornings in any stay are typically organised around the water: snorkelling on the house reef, a free-diving session with a marine instructor, a manta excursion when in season, a tour of the resident sea turtle conservation programme run by Waldorf Astoria's AURA marine biology team, or a private dive at one of South Malé Atoll's well-known sites.
Mid-mornings are sometimes spent at the main resort, three minutes away. The Private Island concierge organises the transfer, the kids head to the Young Discoverers' Club, the adults head to the spa or the resort's overwater Mandara treatments, or the family meets at one of the eleven restaurants for a long Maldivian lunch overlooking the lagoon.
Afternoons run quieter. Pool time at one of the residence pools. A book on the white sand of one of the private beaches. A treatment in the private spa room. A nap that lasts as long as a Maldivian afternoon nap is meant to.
Sunset is the social pivot of any day. The entertainment clubhouse opens. Cocktails on the central deck. The chefs prepare a beach barbecue, a formal dinner in one of the residences, a sandbank picnic the team has organised by tender, or whatever the guest party has indicated they want that night.
Late evenings are the clubhouse, the firepit on the beach, the stars over the Indian Ocean, the soundtrack of the lagoon. For a family party, this is when the children have been escorted to bed by their nannies and the adults take over the deck. For a wedding party, this is when the dance floor stays open.
The Setting
Ithaafushi sits in South Malé Atoll, an unusually convenient location for an ultra-luxury Maldivian property. Most exclusive-use private islands in the Maldives require a seaplane transfer of 30 to 90 minutes from Malé. Ithaafushi requires only 15 minutes by seaplane or, alternatively, 40 minutes by private yacht on one of the resort's six Ithaafushi Princess vessels.
This proximity matters for two specific guest scenarios. First, it makes the Maldives realistic for a long weekend escape from East Asia, the Middle East, or Europe: arrive in Malé on a midnight flight, be on the Private Island deck by sunrise. Second, it makes the property well-suited to multigenerational gatherings where elderly grandparents or very young children would find a 90-minute seaplane connection difficult.
The waters of South Malé Atoll are part of the well-protected Maldivian central archipelago, with the same coral reefs, the same warm clear water, the same marine biodiversity profile as the more remote atolls. The South Malé reef line is among the country's most diverse, with regular sightings of reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, and a year-round resident population of bottlenose dolphins.
Access
- Velana International Airport, Malé: 15 minutes by private seaplane direct to the Private Island, or 40 minutes by the resort's Ithaafushi Princess yacht (six-vessel fleet, complimentary for guests)
- From the Malé Airport VIP terminal: dedicated Waldorf Astoria lounge with full immigration, refreshments, and direct boarding
- Onward connections from Malé: direct flights from London, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Moscow, Frankfurt, and most major Asian and Gulf hubs
- Arrival: by private jetty directly onto the Private Island, not via the main resort
A guest leaving Dubai or Singapore in the morning is on the Private Island for dinner. A guest leaving London or Paris in the evening is on the deck by mid-morning the next day.
What Ithaafushi actually rents is the rare combination that the rest of the Maldivian private-island market does not offer: the largest single exclusive-use island in the country, sized for the household-scale gathering that has outgrown a villa, with the operational depth of a 122-villa Waldorf Astoria resort and its eleven restaurants three minutes away by boat.
For the family that wants to celebrate a milestone in the Maldives, and that wants the whole family in one place without putting anyone in a smaller room than they deserve, this is the property.
